TRENARY, MICH. -- In a quirky celebration spanning over thirty years, the charming town of Trenary in the Upper Peninsula has found a unique antidote to the winter doldrums: outhouse racing, attracting attendees from across Michigan and neighboring states, including those living in Metro Detroit.
Embracing their Yooper spirit, residents are gearing up for the 31st edition of the Trenary Outhouse Classic, affectionately dubbed the "Turdy First Annual" by its organizers, set to take place on Saturday, February 24th.
This spectacle attracts attendees from all corners of Michigan and neighboring states, eager to witness the hilarity unfold. Teams, armed with creativity and a spirit of fun, navigate the slippery terrain as they push their homemade outhouses down a 500-foot snowy racetrack. Each outhouse bears whimsical monikers like "Poop Scootin' Boogie" and "Wiped Clean," adding an extra layer of amusement to the spirited event.
As stipulated by "Da Rules" outlined on the race's registration forms, participating outhouses must be crafted atop skis and must feature a toilet seat and a roll of toilet paper. Beyond these essentials, the design of the outhouses is left entirely to the ingenuity of each competing team.
Stacey Rucinski, president of the Outhouse Classic Committee, remarked on the boundless creativity displayed by participants: "People truly unleash their imagination with their designs." She added, "The atmosphere is electric, drawing in folks from far and wide, and the camaraderie among attendees is palpable. It's a testament to the warm spirit of our community."
In addition to the thrilling races, which feature divisions catering to kids, teens, and adults alike, the event offers a range of engaging activities. Among them is the highly anticipated fur hat contest, a perennial favorite, alongside vendors showcasing delectable food and charming crafts.

Adding a fresh twist to the festivities in 2024 is the introduction of a mullet contest with the crowned victor walking away with a unique T-shirt paired with a special roll of toilet paper.
For those eager to join the action, the registration fee to enter the races stands at $20 per team. Entrance fee pins can be snagged for $5 on the day of the event or at a discounted rate of $3 if purchased in advance from local businesses. Notably, proceeds generated from the event play a vital role in supporting various community enrichment initiatives, including a high school scholarship program and this year's Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza.
