Westland, despite being Michigan’s tenth largest city, populated with 84,000 residents and very urban in appearance, has that quintessential “small town” feel. In Westland neighbors know their neighbors; we bump into acquaintances in the grocer, at the (Westland) Mall, and at the gas station. These attributes are but one reason why Westland has embraced the Compassionate Cities movement. Westland residents support Relay for Life to fight cancer. We support Mission Green and recycle to be good stewards of Mother Earth. We volunteer our time planting and maintain the community garden so the less fortunate can enjoy fresh and healthy vegetables. Over 300 of us came together to join Buddy Shuh’s Biggest Loser weight loss regimen because we realized that together we could achieve success better than we could alone. We share a desire to be part of something larger than us and to do it together.
Westland is primarily served by Wayne-Westland Schools, but some areas are served by Livonia Public Schools.
The Wayne-Westland Community Schools is comprised of eleven elementary schools (K-4), two upper elementary schools (5-6), two middle schools (7-8), two high schools (9-12) and an ultra-modern facility for career/technical training.
In recent years, the district has implemented and expanded many programs. These programs include classroom technology, world language classes beginning at the elementary level, life skills curriculum which teaches character development, gifted and talented classrooms and before and after school programs. Wayne-Westland also offers adult and alternative education, an early childhood and family development center, and senior citizens activities.
Transportation services are provided to approximately 8,300 students in the district each day. Elementary students who reside over one mile from school and secondary students who reside over one and one-half miles from school are eligible for transportation services. The district enjoys an exceptional State Police Bus Inspection Report for its fleet.
The district is staffed by 1,782 teachers, secretaries, paraprofessionals, custodians, and administrators, as well as employees in the areas of maintenance, transportation and food services.
