For four unforgettable days this summer, Detroit will become a maritime marvel as historic tall ships from across the globe grace its skyline once again. From August 7–10, 2025, the Sail Detroit festival will transform the city’s waterfront into a living celebration of seafaring heritage, global exploration, and community spirit—anchored in the very heart of the Motor City.

It’s not every day that towering masts and billowing sails glide along the Detroit River, and for the first time in nearly 25 years, these ships will do just that—making this one of the region’s most anticipated events of the decade.

Sail Detroit: Where History Meets the Horizon

Organized by the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, Sail Detroit 2025 is more than just a nautical spectacle—it's a community-wide celebration that pays homage to Detroit’s maritime roots while looking boldly toward the future. This family-friendly festival will bring together a fleet of grand vessels, some historic, others newly constructed, each with their own legacy and lore. Visitors will not only witness these magnificent ships, but board them, meet their crews, and explore maritime history in a hands-on, immersive way.

Nestled between Hart Plaza and the Renaissance Center, the Port Authority’s headquarters will serve as the main event hub. From there, guests can stroll the riverwalk, gaze at the skyline mirrored in the water, and soak in the vibrant energy that only a festival like this can offer.

A Spectacle 24 Years in the Making

The last time tall ships filled the Detroit River was in 2001, when the inaugural Sail Detroit took place as part of the city’s tricentennial celebration. That event drew over one million visitors, making it one of the most memorable public gatherings in the city’s recent history. Nearly 20 vessels from around the world docked along Detroit’s shores, and the city came alive with the sound of sea shanties, the creak of rigging, and the joy of shared experience.

Fast forward to 2025, and Detroit is ready to rekindle that magic. This year’s festival is part of the Tall Ships Challenge Great Lakes, a multi-city tour organized by Tall Ships America. In addition to Detroit, the 2025 challenge includes stops in Duluth, Minnesota, and Erie, Pennsylvania, as well as other waterfront destinations around the Great Lakes.

The Journey to Detroit

To reach the city, these vessels will chart a path through the St. Lawrence River, sail across Lake Ontario, and cruise through Lake Erie, eventually navigating into the Port of Detroit, one of the Great Lakes’ most strategic maritime hubs. The sight of these ships sailing past Belle Isle, under the Ambassador Bridge, and into downtown will be nothing short of breathtaking.

The fleet is scheduled to arrive on Thursday, August 7, with ships parading along the riverfront before docking for public boarding and exploration from August 8–10.

More Than a Festival—An Interactive Voyage

Beyond photo ops and sail-spotting, Sail Detroit will offer educational programs, sailing demonstrations, and opportunities to learn about:

  • Maritime careers
  • Navigation and shipbuilding
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Detroit’s role in global shipping and trade

Whether you're a seasoned sailor, curious kid, or history enthusiast, there's something to spark the imagination. Each vessel will host public tours, with crew members on hand to answer questions and share stories of life at sea.

Experiences on Deck: Tickets, Tours, and Timed Entry

Guests can choose from a variety of ticket options to create a custom maritime adventure. Public access is available August 8–10, and to ensure smooth boarding and minimize crowding, tickets are sold in timed slots. Here's the scoop:

Early Bird Ticket Prices (until July 1):
  • Adults: $20
  • Children, Seniors, Military: $12
  • Family Pass (2 adults + 2 children/seniors/military): $50

After July 1, prices increase—so early booking is encouraged. All ticket sales are final and non-refundable, and advance registration is strongly recommended due to limited daily capacity.

VIP Adventures: The Captain’s Dinner and Group Outings

For those craving a truly unique experience, Sail Detroit is offering a Captain’s Dinner—an exclusive, one-night-only event that pairs fine dining with waterfront views and personal interaction with ship captains and crew. Corporate outings and private group tours are also available, providing a picture-perfect setting for team building, client appreciation, or just an elevated day on the river.

Detroit’s Maritime Future: A Port with Purpose

The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority has spent decades championing the importance of maritime activity to the region’s economy and culture. With terminals handling everything from liquid cargo to bulk goods and cruise passengers, the Port of Detroit is a vital player in both domestic and international shipping.

Events like Sail Detroit are part of the Authority’s mission to build community connection around the water—and to educate residents on the environmental and economic importance of their riverfront.

Supporting the Celebration: Sponsorship Opportunities

The Tall Ships Are Coming! is more than a slogan—it’s a call to action for local businesses, civic groups, and regional leaders. Sponsorship opportunities are available for brands looking to:

  • Boost visibility with thousands of onsite attendees
  • Gain media exposure across TV, radio, print, and digital channels
  • Align with a celebration of heritage, innovation, and local pride

Interested organizations are invited to contact Colleen Robar at 313-207-5960 or crobar@robarpr.com for more information about partnership tiers and benefits.

What to Expect Onsite

Along with tall ship tours, visitors can expect:

  • Food and beverage vendors from beloved local eateries
  • Live music performances with a nautical flair
  • Artisan markets and themed merchandise
  • Kids’ activities and hands-on learning stations
  • Photo ops with ship backdrops, river views, and downtown skylines

And with numerous vantage points along the riverwalk, the festival makes for a perfect full-day (or multi-day) outing.

Planning Your Visit

The Port Authority’s event headquarters is ideally located between two of Detroit’s most iconic landmarks—Hart Plaza and the Renaissance Center. For those coming from out of town, nearby lodging options are available via Visit Detroit, with hotels ranging from luxury to family-friendly.

Parking will be available in surrounding structures, and public transit routes will be enhanced to support peak festival hours.

A Celebration of Water, Wonder, and Community

Whether you're fascinated by the engineering of a three-masted schooner or simply looking for a joyful, unplugged day along the river, Sail Detroit 2025 offers a rare and remarkable experience.

These ships are more than vessels—they're time machines, floating museums, and beacons of what’s possible when communities rally around their shared history. Detroit is once again ready to embrace its river, its roots, and the winds of change.

So bring your family, your curiosity, and your sense of adventure. The sails are raised. The ships are near. And the river is calling.
