Griswold's Hideaway, a new Christmas Pop-up bar located in Royal Oak's recently opened Bandit Tavern & Hideaway, is taking Metro Detroit by storm.  With a theme based off of the 1980's Christmas classic movie, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, this is hands down the most creative pop-up bar for anyone living in Royal Oak, MI (or living in Metro Detroit at all for that matter) to go to this holiday season. 

As the holiday season unfolds, a wave of festive pop-up bars with festive themes have emerged throughout the area. However, themed like this, very, very few go to this level of extra. If you’re visiting, or moving to Metro Detroit during the holiday season, don’t miss it. 

For those who’ve been living under a rock for the past 30 years and have yet to experience what is arguably the best Christmas movie ever made, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989), starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'angelo, Randy Quaid, Johnny Galecki, and Juliette Lewis, is about the Griswold family's chaotic and humorous holiday experience. The film follows Clark Griswold's comical misadventures as he strives to create the perfect Christmas for his family, only to encounter a series of hilarious mishaps and setbacks. 

Griswold’s Hideaway

"Take a look around you, Ellen! We're at the threshold of hell!" exclaims Griswold Clark in a memorable one-liner from "National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation." Now, the opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in the merriment and hilarity depicted in the film arises at Griswold’s Hideaway, just unveiled in the lower level of Bandit Tavern shortly after Thanksgiving.

Decorations paying homage to the Griswold family and their eclectic group of acquaintances adorn the entire Hideaway. This immersive decor aims to transport visitors into the whimsical world of the iconic Christmas movie.

As a delightful complement to the festive ambiance, the tavern also offers up a special themed drink menu, promising patrons a taste of the holiday spirit with every sip. With a menu boasting holiday concoctions with names deriving from Christmas Vacation, such as Cousin Eddie’s Eggnog (a festive mixture of bourbon, run, brandy, eggnog, with a graham cracker crust), Hallelujah, Where’s the Tylenol (white cranberry juice, lime juice, triple sec, silver tequila, with a sugar candy rim), and the classic Shitter’s Full (vodka, kahlúa, espresso, peppermint creamer, peppermint extract, whip cream, and candy cane dust), the only begging question is, where shall we begin?

Open every Thursday (5PM-10PM), and again on Fridays and Saturdays from 8PM-2AM through the holidays, we suggest you begin by showing up early. No reservations are taken for Griswold's Hideaway, with seats being strictly on a first come, first serve basis. And those seats will likely fill quickly each night.

Recently making its debut in vibrant downtown Royal Oak, the Bandit Tavern & Hideaway (located at 419 S Main St, Royal Oak, MI 48067) is housed within the historic B&C Grocery building, a distinguished entry on the National Register of Historic Places. This location has witnessed the evolution of several establishments, each contributing to the unique character of the space. Previous occupants include the well-known names of Bastone Brewery, Vinoteca Wine Bar, Café Habana, Monk Belgian Beer Alley, Gogi Seoul Kitchen, Cinq, Commune Lounge, Craft, and most recently, Jolly Pumpkin; many of which were local favorites for those living in Metro Detroit.

Comfort food takes center stage with dishes like skillet cornbread with jalapeño jelly and honey butter, shrimp and grits, succotash, mac and cheese with candied bacon, mini beignets, and hot chicken.
