The History of Ann Arbor

Moving to Ann Arbor

In 1825, John Allen and Elisha Walker Rumsey bought 640 acres of land from the local government for $800, and registered it with Wayne County under the name of "Annarbour", the earliest known version of the current name, Ann Arbor. The name comes from the wives of the village's founders, both named Ann, and the beautiful stands of oak trees throughout the area.

In 1827, Ann Arbor became the Washtenaw County seat and was incorporated into a village just six years later. 40 acres of land was set aside and offered to the state as the site of the state capitol, but in the end, Lansing won out and the land was later offered to the University of Michigan.

In 1837, the University of Michigan moved to Ann Arbor from Detroit, and the city grew rapidly as a result. Nearly 100 years later, we still enjoy the beautiful scenery and welcoming community.
