What's Happening with Michigan's Fall Colors in 2023?

This year, Michigan has been basking in a warm and adequately wet summer, priming the landscape for an imminent color explosion, as you know if you’re living in Michigan. Previous forecasts suggested that we might see the foliage turn a bit earlier than usual. However, late August and early September weather patterns seem to have pushed the timetable back a tad.

For those venturing to the Upper Peninsula, anticipate peak colors by late September to early October. Meanwhile, down in the southernmost areas, peak hues will likely make their grand appearance around mid-October.

Keep this tidbit in mind while charting your leaf-peeping journey: Northern regions experience the change first, and the spectacle moves southward. Inland areas tend to turn first, followed by the coasts, which usually peak later.

Best Times for Fall Colors in Southeast Michigan

Southeast Michigan, home to both urban centers and suburban treasures, is expected to reach its colorful crescendo in mid-to-late October. Though the region is famed for its cityscapes and modern amenities, it doesn't skimp on natural beauty. Consider visiting Plymouth Orchards near charming Plymouth, MI, or Yates Cider Mill in Rochester Hills for a delightful blend of scenic views, activities, and tasty treats. My favorite and a favorite for many of our clients moving to Michigan is of course the Franklin Cider Mill in downtown Franklin. With the trees as the backdrop in addition to the river that flows through the property, it’s a beautiful sight.

Perna's Pick 1

Consider taking a scenic drive along Huron River Drive, stretching from Ann Arbor to Dexter. This route offers stunning views of the river and vibrant foliage, making it an excellent choice for nature enthusiasts. Additionally, it serves as a popular bike route for cyclists. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Dexter Cider Mill (the longest continuously run Cider Mill in Michigan) and the local Metro Park along the way.

Perna's Pick 2

Another recommendation is Hines Drive, which extends from Northville to Dearborn. This route follows the old M14 and runs parallel to the Rouge River. It offers picturesque wooded areas that are perfect for walking, and it is also well-suited for cycling.

Experience the Western Upper Peninsula

Known for its long, harsh winters, the Western Upper Peninsula redeems itself with perhaps the most striking fall foliage in the state. Expect peak colors around the last weekend of September. A drive along Lake Superior's shoreline is fantastic, but for the ultimate spectacle, head to the Porcupine Mountains and the Lake of the Clouds Overlook.

Perna's Pick 1

For those interested in a unique driving experience, Copper Harbor is a must-visit. Specifically, take a drive on US-41, which features a segment known as "the tunnel." This route offers a captivating journey through a natural tunnel of trees, providing a serene and visually stunning experience.

Perna's Pick 2

Located just outside of Marquette, Michigan, Morgan Falls offers a pet-friendly park that descends into a wooded area. This location is ideal for nature lovers and those looking to spend quality time outdoors with their pets. The park provides a tranquil setting for walks and relaxation, making it a perfect getaway.

Fall Colors in the Eastern Upper Peninsula

The Eastern Upper Peninsula is another must-visit spot, with the fall colors typically following shortly after the western region. 2023 experts suggest that the best time to visit is early October. Don't miss out on Tahquamenon Falls, a natural marvel that provides a stunning backdrop for the season's vivid hues.

Perna’s Pick

Visit Fayette Historic State Park, located on Lake Michigan’s Big Bay de Noc. Once a small town built around the iron-ore industry, this area is now classified as a ghost town - but an extremely beautiful one still loaded with charm. While you're there, make sure to stop at Snail Shell Harbor to enjoy panoramic views of the town and the surrounding woodland.

The Best of Northern Michigan

Mid-October is your go-to timeframe for witnessing fall's grandeur in Northern Michigan. A drive through the Tunnel of Trees is especially enchanting, where the canopy of color forms a sort of natural cathedral.  I’ve driven the full 22 miles along the M-119 and it does not disappoint.  It’s literally a tunnel of trees that are beautiful to behold, especially with Lake Michigan views.  People Moving to Michigan in the fall are in for a treat if they get the chance to see it. Also consider exploring charming towns like Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Traverse City for a well-rounded experience.

Perna’s Pick 1

The 22 mile stretch called the Tunnel Of Trees Scenic Heritage Route, also known on the map at the M-119, which runs between Cross Village and all the way to the charming lakeside town of Harbor Springs. The drive can be done heading either direction, and I highly recommend grabbing a bite at the iconic Legs Inn at Cross Village, or walk around downtown Harbor Springs to take in the shops when you finish the drive.

Perna’s Pick 2

The Leelanau State Park at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula. With views overlooking Lake Michigan, and over 1500 acres including more than 8 miles of trails to enjoy, this is an incredible place to enjoy the fall foliage. A bonus to this trip is making the drive along the highly popular M22 route. For a full day, start in Traverse City and take M22 to Northport before continuing to Leelanau State Park. On your way back to TC, take M22 down through Empire past the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes (or stop through for ANOTHER incredible scenic route), before taking M72 back to Traverse. Pro tip - don’t miss the awesome wineries!

Uncover West Michigan's Autumn Beauty

In West Michigan, the peak of fall foliage typically occurs around mid-October. If you happen to miss the stunning leaf-viewing experience in Northern Michigan, the Holland area offers a fantastic alternative. Situated near Lake Michigan, Holland is a charming, Dutch-inspired town that provides an excellent base for exploring history, nature, and a vibrant downtown area. For panoramic views of the fall colors, consider visiting the Holland State Park and ascending to the summit of Mt. Pisgah, a large dune accessible via a boardwalk and stair system within the State Park. With 275 steps leading to a peak that stands 157 feet above Lake Michigan, it offers an ideal vantage point for appreciating the natural beauty of the area. Additionally, the Lake Michigan shoreline is dotted with quaint downtowns that are perfect for tree viewing.

Last Chance in Southwest Michigan

In Southwest Michigan, late-season leaf-peeping is still an option, with the peak colors typically appearing in mid-October. Towns such as New Buffalo and South Haven provide a delightful blend of vibrant foliage and unspoiled lakefront views.

Perna's Pick

While Holland State Park and Mt. Pisgah are excellent choices, Saugatuck should not be overlooked. This area offers miles of beaches stretching to the north and south. A walk here allows you to experience the best of both worlds: the tranquil waters on one side and a canopy of colorful trees on the other.

Mid-Michigan's Hidden Gem

In Mid-Michigan, you'll find a harmonious mix of vivid fall colors and scenic waterfronts. A notable destination is Frankenmuth, a Bavarian town situated between Flint and Saginaw. This town offers a unique combination of autumnal hues and cultural festivities. If you're planning a weekend stay between September 14-17 (2023), you'll not only enjoy the fall foliage, but can partake in the grand Oktoberfest celebrations. Also while in Frankenmuth, a visit to Bronner's, the world's largest Christmas store, is highly recommended. And it would be remiss to leave without dining at Zehnder's, a restaurant renowned for its chicken and in operation since 1856.

Perna's Pick

For a unique experience, consider a ride on the Coopersville & Marne Railway. This is a restored train from the 1920s that travels a seven-mile stretch between Coopersville and Marne, offering passengers a nostalgic journey through scenic landscapes.

South Central Michigan's Autumn Treasures

In South Central Michigan, the peak of fall foliage is expected to occur from mid-to-late October. For those seeking a unique vantage point, kayaking down the Grand River provides exceptional views of the autumnal transformation. The area includes Jackson, known for its historic prison, but also boasts an array of parks, lakes, and vibrant leaves. A word of caution: avoid picking up hitchhikers in the vicinity.

Perna's Pick

For nature enthusiasts, the Whitehouse Nature Center at Albion College is a must-visit. The center features five miles of trails across 140 acres and is home to hundreds of plant species, making it a remarkable destination for outdoor exploration.
