Winter Blast 2024: Royal Oak's Premier Winter Festival

February 2nd to 4th
Royal Oak Centennial Commons
Cost: FREE
Friday the 2nd 4pm to 11pm
Saturday the 3rd 11am to 11pm
Sunday the 4th 11am to 8pm

Royal Oak Winter Blast is back for its 3rd year in Royal Oak since moving from Downtown Detroit for the first 17 years. In 2023, over 65,000 people went, and that’s with the freezing temps of last year. In 2022 over 80,000 people attended, and this year with the warmer temps it’s looking like it’ll be about 90,000!  That’s quite the party!  What are we going to see when we get there?!  Tons of fun and FREE stuff.

FREE Ice Skating!

Royal Oak has an ice rink now and Winter Blast Weekend is an open free skate.  You can bring your own skates or rent them for just 5 dollars.  They have most kids and adult sizes and will have performances all three days, Friday at 7pm, Saturday and Sunday at 3pm and 5pm.

LIVE Music

They’ll have live music across three stages right to the end of each night with a ton of local talent.  The two I have my eye on are of course the Killer Flamingos, voted best cover band in Detroit multiple times, and Detroit Techno Militia is bringing in T. Linder and DJ Seoul.  It wouldn’t be a Metro Detroit festival without a little techno. FULL lineup below.

KIDS Stage

There’s a separate kids stage with live music, magic shows by Randyl Lee, juggler Tim Salisbury and Nat Spinz on Hula Hoops.  Beatboxing with Jake (I have no idea how to beatbox).

LIVE Ice Carving

The Ice Garden will have by the end over 40 ice sculptures created live on site throughout the weekend. Live ice carving demonstrations will happen featuring both local and national artists.

FREE Medieval Village

This thing is cool.  Like a mini Renaissance Festival right on S. Williams Street (see map of event below).  They’ll have Jugglers, fire dancers, Vikings, Shoe Cobblers (that’s shoe makers kids!) Ice Thrones for the King and Queen, Axe Throwing and Archery.

ZIP LINE

Cost: 15 per ticket, or 25 for two tickets.  On 3rd street just east of Troy here. As cool as this is, my fear of heights is going to preclude me from doing this one, but you can!  I believe in you, I always have.  It’s 300 feet long and 34 feet off the ground.

FOOD TRUCKS

The food truck rally will have Cinnabon, Imperial Tacos (so good!) Mr. Deep Fried (hopefully next to Mr. Salad lol) Bowers Concessions (that’s a good one) and Smore Kits starting at 3 bucks.

SKI and SNOWBOARD LESSONS

They’re bringing in instructors from Mt. Brighton to teach beginners to ski and snowboard.  You can bring your own equipment or rent on site.

KIDS Adventure Zone

This is a mini-carnival with a swing ride, climbing wall, Wizzer Ride and a pirate ship.  Ride tickets are 5 per ride or 5 rides for 20 dollars.

TREE RUNNER

New in 2024 Tree Runner is bringing their mobile ninja Ropes Course Adventure.  This thing is cool and has levels for beginners and experienced Tree Runners.

FAMILY Heated Warming Tent

Get out of the cold 11 to 6 Saturday and Sunday!  In the tent the Michigan Science Center will be teaching Frostology, how temperatures relate to the movement of atoms and molecules with some cool experiments using nitrogen on solids, liquids and gasses.  And all throughout the weekend there will be arts and crafts, coloring and more.  All tent activities are FREE.
