Top Family Friendly Metro Detroit Events for May 2022

The weather is finally warming up, flowers are beginning to pop and we’re that much closer to another beautiful Michigan summer! This May we have a variety of family friendly events to get out and enjoy with the kids.

After reviewing your recommendations, we have taken our popular Things to do in Metro Detroit video series and broken it down into Family Friendly & Adult activities. In this edition we'll be coveringout Top 18 Family Events around Metro Detroit for May 2022!


Starting out in Plymouth on May 1 from 12-2PM come enjoy a Tea Party and Let Your Hair Down with Rapunzel at the Plymouth Historical Museum. Kids are encouraged to dress up, make crafts, and take photos. Get your tickets as soon as possible. This one is selling out fast!

For one of our favorite holidays, May the 4th be with you, we have 3 separate locations putting on all things Star Wars! Visit the Canton Library from 6-8PM for meet and greet with surprise guests, visit the Dexter Library the entire first week of May for teens and tweens to enter a Star Wars themed trivia contest with a chance to win a galactic prize! There is also an adult only Star Wars Trivia with themed prizes taking place at the Auburn Hills Library on May 4 from 6:30-7:45PM!

May also means Mother’s Day and we have three events especially for moms this month. On May 6 at Meadow Brook in Rochester there is a Pre-Mother’s Day Brunch with delicious foods, wine service, live music and more! On Mother’s Day (May 8) head to Downtown Royal Oak from 7AM-2PM for their annual Royal Oak in Bloom flower sale. Afterwards, make your way over to Kensington Metro Park in Milford from 1-2PM for some fresh air and a change of scenery on a guided walk along the nature trails!

Do you like animals? We do! On May 7, head to the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak to show your support for a great cause! The Make A Wish 2022 Walk for Wishes will begin at 8:45AM. Register today, help fundraise and make a difference! Also happening now through May 28, every Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 7PM come see Sea Lions: Life By a Whisker at the Longway Planetarium in Flint. Learn about the world of a sea lion pup and meet the people trying to save this wonderful species.

For a blast from the past, come see Mary Poppins performed live May 12-15 at 7PM at The Hawk Community Center in Farmington Hills! Based on the books and the popular Disney Film, this is sure to be fun for those of all ages. You can also visit Thomas the Train at The Henry Ford on May 13-15th between 9:30AM-5PM. Spend the day at the Henry Ford, but tickets are timed and must be purchased in advance.

It’s only May, but we are Halfway to Halloween! Head to Ann Arbor on May 21 from 9AM-4PM for a Vendor & Craft Show celebrating everything spooky! With nearly 100 vendors, this indoor/outdoor event will feature costumes, props, and much, much more!

Visit Shelby Township on May 21-22 to blast off into space! Higher Orbits - Go for Launch is for 8-12 graders with a love of science and space. In this 2 day event they will meet and learn from NASA astronauts & professionals, and collaborate with & compete against each other to create their very own space experiment. Each winner from the various Go for Launch events will be judged with the final winning design being launched into outer space!

May is looking like an excellent month for fair-goers! Make your way to downtown Birmingham on May 7-8 for Art Birmingham (formerly Birmingham Fine Art Festival) with art, entertainment, food and activities that draws over 80,000 visitors per year. For even more art, on May 20-22 make your way to Lake Orion for their Flower & Art Fair and enjoy a day in their beautiful downtown area! Things will be getting hot in Ypsilanti at the 2022 Chili Cook-Off! Come cast your vote and also enjoy live music, drinks and other activities at the Ypsi Firehouse! Car enthusiasts won’t want to miss Ford & Lincoln Day taking place in Pontiac at the M1 Concourse on May 7 from 8-11AM. Admission is free and it really doesn’t get much better than cars & coffee! Last but certainly not least, get your nerd on May 13-15 at the Novi Suburban Collection Showplace for the Motor City Comic Con! Everything comic related will be here, and photo ops with guests including Matthew Lilard, Danny Trejo, and Captain Kirk himself - William Shatner will be in attendance!
