Heading into the final month of summer, there are a ton of fantastic family events & activities happening in Metro Detroit! Here are our top, must see, must do picks for August 2022 that you won’t want to miss!

 


#1 King Tut Exhibit
Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

Happening now through September 16, don’t miss your chance to see the King Tut exhibit at the Wright Museum in Detroit! 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and this impressive exhibit is divided into five sections for the whole family to enjoy - An introduction to Ancient Egypt, The Archeological Discovery, The Private Pharaoh, The Public Pharaoh, and The Royal Burial. This installation features more than 120 replicas of Pharaoh Tut’s sacred and personal possessions including the golden Canopic Shrine, the Pharaoh's magnificent chariot, the iconic golden mummy case, funeral mask and much more!

#2 Heroes and Villains: The Art of Disney Costumes
The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation
20900 Oakwood Blvd, Dearborn, MI 48124

Heroes and Villains: The Art of Disney Costumes returns to The Henry Ford Museum! Spanning nearly six decades of Disney films, this exhibit explores the level of craftsmanship and artistry required to produce each costume presented across stage and screen. With 79 costumes from 32 films and representing 24 different designers worn by 71 different actors, visitors can expect to see more than 70 original pieces, including ball gowns, sorcerers’ capes, military uniforms, tiaras, and of course glass slippers. The exhibition explores the vision, process, and craft used to create the costumes worn by some of the biggest names in entertainment. Heroes & Villains features costumes from some of Disney’s kindest heroes and toughest villains, as well as insights from designers, photographs, interactive displays, and a special film. #3 Dinosauria
The Detroit Zoo
8450 W 10 Mile Rd, Royal Oak, MI 48067

Make your way to the Detroit Zoo now until September 5th for Dinosauria! This exhibit is an immersive walk-through experience that will take you back in time to a world of prehistoric wonder as you journey through a lush and winding trail with incredible sights at every turn. Dinosauria features 29 life-like animatronic dinosaurs, including a towering, 65-foot-long Brachiosaurus!  This is a really great event for kids featuring a 3 acre Dino Trail recreating prehistoric life, a predator vs. prey educational exhibit, hands-on fossil digging sites and much more. While you’re there, be sure to stop by Table 28, the Zoo’s newest Restaurant named after the year 1928, when the zoo officially opened to the public. Please note that all non-members are still required to pay for admission to the zoo to attend this event and that Dinosauria tickets are an additional fee.

#4 Marshmallow Fly & Fry
Heritage Park
24725 Farmington Rd, Farmington Hills, MI 48335

On August 9th, head to Heritage Park in Farmington Hills for the return of their Marshmallow Fly & Fry! Hosted by the Farmington Hills Special Services Department, the Farmington hills Fire Department and Busch’s Fresh Food Market, this FREE family event will run from 5PM to 8PM. Hot dogs, s’mores, and drinks will be available for a nominal fee, or cook and enjoy our own, but the highlight of the night will be over 1,000 marshmallows falling from the sky! Kids will need to act fast to race and grab as many as possible, which they can then exchange for goodies. Games, inflatables and more will also be on hand, so load up the family and stop out for a fun evening!

#5 Tons of Trucks
Clintonwood Park
6000 Clarkston Rd, Clarkston, MI 48348

August 13th, make your way to Clarkston for their annual Tons of Trucks event, which doubles with Kids Play Free Day at Clintonwood Park! From 10AM to 1PM, kids will get to sit in, climb on and play on a variety of vehicles. There will also be a bounce house, crafts, and games onsite for everyone to enjoy at this free event. Afterwards, spend the day exploring the park and take part in the spray park, inline skating rink, playscape, walking trails and much more!

#6 2022 Woodward Dream Show
M1 Concourse

If you're a car enthusiast, this one's for you! Friday August 19th & Saturday August 20th is the inaugural Woodward Dream Show at the M1 Concourse, which coincides with the Woodward Dream Cruise! Stop in on Friday for the car show featuring hot rods, custom cars, cruisers, and muscle cars with a focus on featured classes, marques, and a celebration of car enthusiasm in the heart of the Motor City. In addition you can take a ride with a professional driver on the 1.5 mile North Track, race R/C off-road cars on the custom-built off-road track, listen in on the insider garage panel discussion, enjoy music & entertainment, food trucks, and take part in the Peoples’ Choice voting for the favorite cars being shown. On Saturday The Woodward Dream Parade presented by M1 & Comerica Bank will be taking place featuring a police escort of 200 classic cars cruising on Woodward Avenue and in downtown Pontiac’s historic Widetrack Drive. If you’ve never attended this event or the Dream Cruise, we highly recommend getting out to see why Detroit is known as Motor City.

#7 Garden and Tea Party
Heritage Park

If the Woodward Dream Cruise isn’t your thing, the Garden and Tea Party taking place back at Heritage Park of Farmington Hills on August 19th may be more your speed. Stop in from 6:30PM to 8PM to celebrate the nature center’s children’s garden where native and planted herbs will be harvested from Heritage Parks to enjoy in tea and as snacks. There will also be nature crafts & activities for children to take part in, as well as exploring the park itself. Tea being served has been donated by Fraser Tea in Livonia, which is a great local tea shop we recommend visiting!

#8 Kidz Bop Live Tour

Also taking place on the 19th at Pine Knob Music Theatre is Kidz Bop Live Tour 2022! Back and bigger than ever, kids and families alike can sing and dance along with the KIDZ BOP Kids as they perform today’s biggest hits live on stage, including songs like “Good 4 U” and “Dance Monkey.” This will be the best Kidz Bop show yet with tons of cool surprises, and the fan-favorite Daddy Dance Off, giving dads the chance to show off their best dance moves on stage to a mashup of Y2K hits. #9 Encanto: The Sing-Along Film Concert Tour

We may not talk about Bruno, but your kids will be talking about the Encanto: The Sing-Along Film Concert Tour for weeks after attending this one of a kind show! Coming to Pine Knob Music Theatre on August 27th, the full length film will be displayed on the big screen with a full band on stage playing all 8 original songs, bringing the hit Disney movie to life so you feel like you’re in the movie! The box office smash Encanto has quickly become a favorite to Disney fans and children around the world. With its fun storyline and chart-topping hit songs, this event will not be one to miss!
