#1 Royal Oak Farmers Market 

One of our local favorites is the Royal Oak Farmers Market. This particular market has been in operation since 1925 and is quickly approaching its centennial anniversary. They also have a strict “farmer must grow” rule for their produce, which is fantastic, as well as meats, cheese and more. You can visit this market every Saturday of the year between 7AM-1PM, on Fridays between May & Thanksgiving from 7AM-1PM, and don’t miss their awesome Antique & Collectibles markets each Sunday from 8AM-3PM. There are free concerts every 2nd Wednesday of the month from May to October, and be sure to make your way down during the winter months for some ice skating just outside of the market. Additionally, the Royal Oak Farmers Markets is available to rent out for special occasions such as weddings, corporate events, food truck rallies, craft shows and much more!

#2 Farmington Farmers Market

Another fantastic Farmers Market can be found right downtown in Farmington every Saturday, May 7 to Oct 29 between 9AM-2PM. This market is in its 29th year and is the perfect place to find fresh locally grown farm produce, plants, flowers, hebs, dairy, honey, artisan breads, meats, fish, crafts, and so much more. There are also a number of special events taking place on selected dates, as well as live music. As with the Royal Oak market, you can also visit here during the winter months for some ice skating and to walk around the gorgeous downtown area and visit the many shops, see a movie at the Civic Theater, or grab a bite to eat at one of the excellent restaurants.

#3 Ann Arbor Farmers Market

If you live on the west side of Metro Detroit, the Ann Arbor Farmers Market located on Detroit Street in the historic Kerrytown District is another fantastic option to visit and is open every Wednesday and Saturday between May and December from 7AM to 3PM, then Saturdays only from 8AM to 3PM in January to April. This 103 year old market is the gathering place for more than 100 local businesses and brings vendors from both Michigan and Ohio. A large variety of fresh goods can be found here each week including produce, herbs, flowers, eggs, cheeses, meats, honey, bread, pastries, candles, jewelry and ceramics. There are also special events that take place here such as food truck rallies every 3rd Wednesday of the month between July and October.

#4 Northville Farmers Market

Next up is the Northville Farmers Market located on the southside of downtown across from Northville Downs on the corner of 7 Mile and Sheldon Road. This open air market is open every Thursday between May 5 to Oct 27 from 8AM to 3PM and features 75 stalls of fresh produce, plants, foods and crafts. It’s a great place to visit each week and you can usually find a couple of food trucks parked there as well, in addition to the numerous shops and restaurants in the awesome downtown area.

#5 Rochester Farmers Market

One of our other favorite cities with an amazing downtown has a phenomenal open air farmers market of their own! The Rochester Farmers Market, currently in its 23rd season, is open every Saturday from May to October at the corner of E Third & Water St. A large number of vendors gather here each week to offer a plethora of fresh produce, herbs, flowers, specialty foods, fresh bread and much more. Unlike most farmers markets, leashed pets are welcome here as well. While you’re there, be sure to stop into the Rochester Hills Museum to learn all about the interesting history of the city!

#6 Birmingham Farmers Market

A little to the south you will find our next top pick on the list, the Birmingham Farmers Market. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and located on Old Woodward, this market runs May through October every Sunday from 9AM to 2PM. A great place for attendees of all ages, this year the market will feature over 35 vendors providing fresh produce, meat & dairy, artisan goods, flowers and much more. There is live music, a kid’s zone and every second Sunday there are special wellness events, as well as other special events that take place throughout the year such as Super Farmer Day and the Harvest Festival. Many of the local retailers and restaurants near the market are also open on Sundays, so save some time to explore downtown while you’re there.

#7 Wilson Barn Farmers Market

Second to last, we have the Wilson Barn Farmers Market, located in Livonia at the corner of Middlebelt and West Chicago Road, the barn market is open every Saturday between July and October from 9AM to 2PM. The original barn that sat in this location was originally built in 1888, but burnt to the ground in 1919. The current standing and national historic barn was then built on the foundation of the original barn. In addition to the farmers market, the barn hosts special family events throughout the year such as the Pumpkin Fest & Barn Car Show, as well as offering the barn to be rented out for special occasions on select dates. #8 Eastern Market

Saving the best for last, Eastern Market in downtown Detroit is the OG (original gangster) of all farmers markets. This massive market was originally located in Cadillac Square and was devoted to hay and wood sales. In 1891 it was relocated to the current location where sales sheds were built, with additional sheds being added in 1922 and 1929. Today, Eastern Market presently covers 43 acres and remains the largest open air flowerbed market and largest historic public market district in the United States. The market can get very busy at times, with as many as 45,000 visitors each Saturday, but is well worth the visit. The farmers market itself runs every Saturday year around from 6AM to 4PM and spans beyond the main structures themselves to incorporate numerous local surrounding businesses. You can find everything here from fresh grown produce to crafts, flowers to food trucks, butcher shops to candles and nearly everything in between. It truly is a historic and amazing area and can easily turn into a full day event of shopping and exploring. This one folks, is not to be missed.
