Metro Detroit cider mills open in waves from mid August through mid September, and most stay open into November. This guide covers every mill across Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Washtenaw and Livingston counties, with verified opening dates, hours, costs and what each one is actually known for.

Metro Detroit cider mills are the one fall tradition almost everyone here agrees on. The first cool morning hits, somebody says the word donut, and half the region ends up driving past the subdivisions looking for a red barn and a line out the door.

A cider mill is a working press that turns whole apples into unfiltered cider on site, which is what separates the real ones from a farm stand selling somebody else's jugs. Some of the mills below have been pressing since before Michigan had paved roads. Others opened in the last three years. A few changed hands recently enough that the sign out front is the same and everything behind it is different. All of it is here, organized by county so you can find the shortest drive from wherever you are.

When Metro Detroit Cider Mills Open

Quick answer: Metro Detroit cider mills open in waves. Apple Charlie's led off on August 1 and Diehl's followed on August 15. The last weekend of August brought Dexter, Rochester, Parmenter's, Plymouth and Parshallville. Labor Day weekend and the two weeks after cover nearly everything else, with Hy's closing out the calendar on September 12.

A handful never close at all. Verellen and Westview's farm market on Van Dyke Avenue in Washington Township, and Spicer Orchards in Fenton all run year round, which makes them useful when the seasonal mills have shut down and you still want cider.

Season endings vary more than people expect. Hy's stops November 1. Diehl's closes November 22. Franklin runs through November 29. Goodison and Rochester go deepest into the calendar, with Goodison serving through Christmas Eve and Rochester through New Year's Eve.

Cider mill opening dates shift with the weather every year, which is why a list written last August is close to worthless this September. Michigan's 2026 apple crop estimate came in at 25 million bushels, or 1.05 billion pounds, which is below the industry average and part of why some picking windows ran tight this season. Michigan State University Extension publishes predicted apple harvest windows for Southeast Michigan, and most orchards build their schedule around them. Early varieties like Paula Red, Ginger Gold and Zestar land first, Honeycrisp follows close behind in early to mid September, and Golden Delicious arrives after that.

Oakland County Cider Mills

Quick answer: Oakland County has seven cider mills, and four of them sit within about fifteen minutes of each other in the Rochester area. Yates on the Clinton River, Rochester and Goodison off Orion Road near the Paint Creek Trail, and Franklin at 14 Mile and Franklin Road are the anchors.

That Rochester cluster makes Oakland the easiest place in the region to hit two mills in one afternoon without spending the day in the car.

Michigan's oldest working water powered mill has been pressing cider since 1876 in Rochester Hills, and the original 1894 turbine still spins under the floor. Yates and Parshallville are the only two mills left in Michigan that still run their presses on water. It is open March through November, with cider and donuts in fall, ice cream in summer and fudge in every season. The half mile Yates River Walk along the Clinton River is free and one of the better short walks in Oakland County. A second location operates at Canterbury Village in Lake Orion.

Opens Saturday, September 5 and runs through Sunday, November 29. Daily 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the market and Apple Shack closing at 5:30 p.m. Free. This is the mill's 189th season, and the cider comes off a 90 ton historic press. The donut recipe came over from Germany and has been handed down through generations. The water wheel out front is decorative now, since the mill switched to electric power in 1968 after an accident took out the original wheel. Owner Melanee Peltz Radner also runs welcomes leashed dogs, and the bakery turns out gluten free doughnuts and vegan scones alongside the standard cinnamon spice. They open Thanksgiving Day until noon.

The Barkham family has pressed unpasteurized cider here since 1981 and rotates specialty blends made with cherries, pears, peaches, grapes and cranberries. Cash or check only, with two ATMs on site.

Goodison Cider Mill

Opens Friday, September 4 and runs through Christmas Eve, but the hours step down three times, so check before a late season trip. September and October are daily 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. November runs daily 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until Thanksgiving Eve. December drops to Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Christmas Eve is 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Free. It is a small red building with white trim next to Baldwin Elementary in Rochester, easy to blow past if you are not watching for it. The pistachio nut bread is why people drive out, and Sunday afternoons bring pony rides. It sits minutes from the Paint Creek Trail, which makes it a natural bike stop. They take cash, check, cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The Diehl family has been in Holly since 1954. Apples here are fresh picked and pre-packaged with NO u-pick, and starting mid September the Pack-n-Tote room lets you mix and match varieties at a discount. Dogs are welcome on the grounds. There is a new wooden train structure, plus a hay maze, kiddie maze, playscape and pond walk, all free. Hayrides run weekends September 5 through October 18 at $3, free for ages 3 and under. Pony rides run weekends September 12 through October 18 at $10. The pumpkin patch opens late September and the corn maze runs through October 20. Their 46th Annual Ciderfest lands September 26 and 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a craft show, a 5K trail run and a one mile run Saturday morning, Hog Heaven BBQ, a vegan food truck, and free balloon creations and face painting.

The farm is open now and the Cider Mill and Fun Farm are set to open September 6 in Commerce Township, though the farm has not posted a firm confirmation yet, so call the hotline before you drive out. Fun Farm and corn maze run Saturdays and Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., last admission 5:00 p.m. Anyone over 32 inches needs a day ticket or a season pass, and a Fun Farm season pass is $45.76. Parking is free. Fire pit rentals run $80 per campfire reservation with Fun Farm wristbands required. This is the farm's 150th year, 1876 to 2026, and the 2026 corn maze design has not been revealed yet.

This was Erwin Orchards until 2022, when Blake's took over a site the Erwin family had run for four generations, and half of South Lyon still calls it Erwin's. A tractor wagon runs out to u-pick apples and pumpkins, and the property includes a corn maze, Funland, a farm store, a bakery and hard ciders on tap.

If picking your own is the real goal rather than the donuts, the orchards across Metro Detroit that actually let you into the rows are a shorter list than the cider mill list, and the difference matters when you are driving forty minutes with kids in the back seat.

Wayne County Cider Mills

Quick answer: Wayne County's cider mills cluster in the Northville and Plymouth corridor, with Parmenter's on Base Line Road, Three Cedars on Six Mile and Plymouth Orchards on Warren Road all within about ten minutes of each other. Apple Charlie's in New Boston covers Downriver.

Quick answer: Macomb County has the densest concentration of cider mills in Michigan. Westview, Verellen and Big Red all sit on or just off Van Dyke Avenue between 30 Mile and 32 Mile, with Stony Creek Metropark nearby and both Blake's Armada locations a short drive northeast.

If you only have one Saturday and you want volume, this is the corridor. You can hit three mills off M-53 without ever getting back on a freeway.

Washtenaw County Cider Mills

Quick answer: Washtenaw County holds the oldest cider mill in Michigan and the oldest continually family owned orchard in the state. Dexter Cider Mill sits on the bank of the Huron River in downtown Dexter, and Wiard's Orchards has been running on Merritt Road in Ypsilanti Township since 1837.

This is the county to drive to when you want history rather than inflatables, with the exception of Wiard's, which manages to be both.

Wiard's opens in two stages, which trips people up every year. The Country Store and cider mill open Tuesday, September 8, running Tuesday through Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Country Fair, meaning the rides and attractions, does not open until Saturday, September 12, and then runs Wednesday through Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Everything is closed Mondays. Country Fair admission is $18 per person on weekdays and $27 on weekends, with a season pass at $46. Babies 23 months and under are free and parking is free. The Country Store is free to enter. Wiard's has been running since 1837, the same year Michigan became a state, and bills itself as Michigan's oldest continually family owned and operated orchard. Night Terrors, the haunted park, runs after dark in October. A Food Truck Rally lands September 12 and 13, with a Fall Car and Jeep Show September 19 and 20.

This is a small, quiet orchard on the Salem side of Northville that has been in operation more than forty years, and it is the opposite of a theme park. Fresh pressed cider, warm donuts, caramel apples, weekend hayrides, and u-pick apples that usually start toward the end of September. Maybury State Park is a few minutes away if you want to stretch the trip into a full afternoon.

Wasem shuts down earlier than anything else on this list, so hit it in September or October rather than saving it for a November drive. U-pick apples run from just after Labor Day through the end of October, with fall raspberries in September and pumpkins in October. The land was deeded in 1832 and the orchard dates to 1881. More than 100 apple varieties, many of them heirloom, are pressed on a modernized 1890 Mount Gilead press, and you can watch the mill run every Saturday and Sunday during the season. The Bossory family bought the farm from the Albers in 1999 and still runs it.

Livingston County Cider Mills

Quick answer: Livingston County has three, and they could not be more different. Spicer Orchards off Clyde Road in Fenton runs like a small resort, Parshallville is a preserved grist mill on North Ore Creek, and Schell Family Farm in Pinckney is a 250 acre agritourism operation still being built out.

Opened August 29. Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Free. Tom Walker's Grist Mill is a State of Michigan historic site and has run as a cider mill since 1968. It is one of only two mills in Michigan still pressing on water power. The old rack and cloth press turns out unpasteurized cider, and the picnic tables along North Ore Creek behind the building are the best seats at any mill in the region. Cinnamon donuts, caramel apples, pies and heirloom apple varieties. The Detlefs family ran it for 40 years through 2024 and the Clark family has it now.

Five generations of the Spicer family have run this place and it functions more like a small resort than a cider mill. Open for the season, with hours that shift alongside the crop, so check their Facebook page before you go. Chris and Dea Schell opened this 250 acre Putnam Township farm to the public in 2019 and have been building it out ever since. Fresh cider, donuts, cider slushies and Ashby's ice cream, u-pick flowers and seasonal produce, sunflower and wildflower fields, a pumpkin patch, the Ghostly Grove haunt in October and Christmas trees in December.

Cider season gets all the attention, but the u-pick farms around Metro Detroit run on a much longer calendar than most people realize, starting with strawberries in June and running clear through pumpkins in late October.

Cider Mills Worth the Drive Beyond the Five Counties

Quick answer: Two mills sit just outside the five county line and are still worth the drive. Pankiewicz in Casco Township is about twenty minutes past Armada in St. Clair County, and Forever Acres in Britton is in Lenawee County, southwest of Milan.

Open Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., from the first weekend of September through the last weekend of October. No entry fee and free parking. This is a twelve acre farm that is small on purpose. U-pick apple bags run $8 for a quarter peck, $12 for a half peck and $22 for a half bushel. U-pick pumpkins are $5 each and apple cider slushies are $3. The farm passed to Aaron and Michael this year, continuing what Kevin and Susan Hurst started in 2019.

Which Metro Detroit Cider Mill Is Closest to You

Quick answer: Almost everyone in the five county region lives within twenty five minutes of a cider mill, and most people are within fifteen. Here is the shortest drive from each part of the metro.

Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Township, Auburn Hills. Yates on Avon Road, Rochester Cider Mill on North Rochester Road, and Goodison on Orion Road are all within about ten minutes of downtown Rochester.

Royal Oak, Birmingham, Ferndale, Berkley, Huntington Woods. Franklin Cider Mill at 14 Mile and Franklin Road is the shortest hop, roughly fifteen minutes west of Woodward.

Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Canton, Livonia. Parmenter's on Base Line, Three Cedars on Six Mile, Plymouth Orchards on Warren, and Obstbaum on Currie are all inside a ten minute triangle.

Commerce Township, Walled Lake, West Bloomfield, White Lake, Wixom. Long Family Orchard on East Commerce Road, minutes off Bogie Lake Road.

South Lyon, Brighton, Howell, Milford, New Hudson. Blake's Lyon Township on Silver Lake Road, with Spicer Orchards off US-23 in Fenton as the second option.

Shelby Township, Macomb Township, Utica, Sterling Heights, Washington, Romeo, Armada. The Van Dyke corridor gives you Westview, Verellen and Big Red, with Stony Creek, Hy's and both Blake's Armada locations further north.

Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Saline, Dexter, Chelsea, Milan. Dexter Cider Mill downtown, Wiard's on Merritt Road, Wasem on Judd Road, and Alber out in Manchester.

Downriver: Trenton, Wyandotte, Woodhaven, Brownstown, Southgate, Taylor. Apple Charlie's on South Huron Road in New Boston is the only real option, and it is a good one.

Holly, Fenton, Clarkston, Ortonville, Grand Blanc. Diehl's on Ranch Road in Holly and Parshallville off Faussett Road are both under twenty minutes.

Detroit and the inner ring. There is no working cider mill inside the city limits, so Franklin at 14 Mile and Franklin Road is the closest option from most of the west side, with the Northville corridor next closest heading west.

How to Plan a Metro Detroit Cider Mill Trip

Quick answer: Go on a weekday if you possibly can, go before ten if you cannot, and check the mill's own Facebook page the morning you leave rather than trusting a roundup written three weeks earlier.

Weekday mornings at a Metro Detroit cider mill are a completely different experience than Saturday afternoons. The donuts are fresher because they come straight out of the fryer instead of a warming tray, the parking is free of drama, and at the bigger operations the weekday admission price is meaningfully lower than the weekend rate. Wiard's is the clearest example, at $18 midweek against $27 on a Saturday.

The most common misconception is that every cider mill charges admission. Most do not. Franklin, Yates, Goodison, Rochester, Dexter, Parshallville, Verellen, Parmenter's, Plymouth and Apple Charlie's are all free to walk into. What costs money is the attraction layer: Funland at the Blake's locations, the Country Fair at Wiard's, the Fun Farm at Long Family. If you just want cider and donuts, you never have to pay a gate fee anywhere in this region.

If you are choosing the best Metro Detroit cider mill for young kids, weigh free play against ticketed play. Rochester Cider Mill gives you a petting farm and a straw pyramid at no cost, while Three Cedars and Long Family charge but deliver far more to do.

Small mills change hours on short notice, which is why published cider mill opening dates need a sanity check before you drive. Wasem is Fridays only. Hy's is weekends only and Obstbaum runs Friday through Sunday. Wiard's opens the store four days before the rides. Big Red has not posted a date at all. On any of those, one phone call saves a forty minute drive.

Bring cash. Rochester Cider Mill and Dexter Cider Mill are both cash or check only, and several of the smaller operations move much faster when you are not waiting on a card reader in a barn with spotty signal.

If you are building a whole fall weekend rather than a single stop, most of these mills sit within a short drive of something else worth doing, and Michigan's fall festival calendar fills in the gaps between cider runs from Labor Day through the end of October. The state tourism office also maintains a broader statewide list of orchards and agritourism destinations if you want to push past the five county area.

Metro Detroit Cider Mills That Have Closed

Two mills still turn up in old guides and search results, and driving to either one wastes a Saturday.

Paint Creek Cider Mill at 4480 Orion Rd. in Rochester is permanently closed. It sat about a quarter mile from Goodison on the same road, which is exactly why people still confuse the two.

Ashton Orchards Cider Mill at 3825 E. Seymour Lake Rd. in Ortonville is also permanently closed.
