You’re doing it wrong.
This isn’t just for Realtors but all business owners & marketers, for the sake of this post I’ll use real estate as the example.
In marketing you are not the hero of the story, the clients are. And I see post after post that goes something like... Look I sold another home, I listed another home, etc., or I wrote a mortgage, or insert X widget or service.
I used to make that mistake constantly. I had so many posts on myself & sales going at one point my mother unfriended me on Facebook. Yep Momma P got tired of seeing her own son in her feed.
Here’s the framework to use and I’ll use one of my own clients as the example.
This person (the client, the Hero, Tim and Sarah fake names) has a problem. They have a child about a year out from elementary school, they wanted to get out of the circle of doom of throwing money away on rent and into a great school district. Also Tim has a need that everything must be on one floor.
We met at an open house & they hired me.
After assessing all their needs we were able to figure out that the house Tim and Sarah needed didn’t exist, but I got a little creative in planning what we could do to a near perfect house to make it perfect.

We were able to find a home that almost fit, it was so close!
I helped them by supplying a contractor that widened 2 doorways for them at a very reasonable price.
Today Tim & Sarah live a much easier life saving a lot of time not driving their kid to school, building equity, and living on one floor they can use the whole house!
The client was the hero, in need of a Guide (us) to achieve a specific result.
Most importantly the people we’re trying to reach need to identify themselves in the story & then see themselves in the results, tying that emotion of having a problem needing solving to your service or product.
Here's the outline of how the story should look:
- Hero has a problem
- On their Journey meets a Guide (didn’t stop believin')
- The Guide gives them a plan that calls them into action
- That results in either:
- A win!
- Avoidance of failure
This is literally every great story out there. In Star Wars, Luke finds Obi Wan and we identify with Luke - not Obi Wan. In Harry Potter (which is really just a Star Wars knockoff), it's the same story with Harry and Dumbledore.
If you need help with ad creative for your business reach out & bounce it off me, regardless of industry. I'm here to help.
Momma, I know I’m still your favorite.
