The Rust Belt Market - Uniquely Ferndale

Metro Detroit is filled with wonderful cities & towns, each with unique qualities and places making the next one different from the last. One of our favorite, most unique cities being Ferndale, Michigan. When we think of what makes Ferndale unique, one place stands out most from the others - The Rust Belt Market.

Located at the northwest corner of 9 Mile & Woodward Ave in Ferndale, Michigan (recently named as one of the Top 10 cities in America for first-time homebuyers) sits the 15,000 square foot building that was once home to big box stores Gap, then Old Navy, before becoming The Rust Belt Market. Owners Chris and Tiffany Best purchased the building and after months of renovation, opened the doors to Rust Belt Market in May of 2011. It was their dream to create an affordable space where local artists, crafters and more could set up shop to sell their goods. In doing so it keeps the human connection alive in a world where internet shopping has grown increasingly more popular.

Fast forward to today, Rust Belt market has exploded in popularity, bringin in droves of shoppers  every Friday through Sunday who come to enjoy popular downtown Ferndale with its numerous shops and wide variety of dining options. Rust Belt Market itself is home to a rotating mix of over 40 independently owned businesses, hand picked by the owners, offering one of a kind gifts ranging everywhere from custom framing, jewelry, furniture, clothing, vintage items, specialty soaps, metal works and everything in between. Essentially, it is one art art fair, one part flea market and one part art community, bringing everyone together for a shopping experience like few others. Another fun addition to Rust Belt Market is that they are home to Ferndale Radio, 100.7FM.

In addition to the many shops, Rust Belt Market is also available to rent as a venue for a number of events. Many have chosen to utilize Rust Belt Market for weddings, corporate events, informal events, formal events, and more. With its rustic interior and red velvet couches, it offers a different, yet affordable option than renting out a typical barn or venue in the area. With the venue space being roughly 4,000 square feet, with a stage and audio equipment, it is suited for fitting parties up to 160 people. With prices beginning at $1,600 (additional upgrades are available) Rust Belt Market has become a popular and unique venue for many occasions.

Another unique aspect of Rust Belt Market is that they offer a full bar, so patrons can enjoy their favorite beverage while browsing the shops. The Rust Belt Bar offers Detroit’s own Valentine’s liquors in many of their drinks, as well as a number of wines, beers, or coffee and other non-alcoholic beverages.

Whether you are shopping for a special, on-of-a-kind gift for a family member, friend, or just looking to have a drink and kill some time while browsing the local art scene (and most likely walking away with something unique for yourself) The rust Belt Market is sure to be unlike most any other shopping experience you have had. Be sure to stop in the next time you are visiting Ferndale to see why we are officially naming it our number one most unique place in Ferndale, Michigan.
