If there’s one event that defines Detroit’s legacy as the Motor City, it’s the Detroit Auto Show. For over a century, this world-renowned showcase has been a pillar of automotive innovation, a place where history is made and the future is unveiled. And in 2026, it’s coming back bigger, bolder, and more immersive than ever.

Scheduled to take place January 14-25, 2026, at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit, the show is set to elevate the experience for industry leaders, car enthusiasts, and families alike. After a record-breaking economic impact of $370 million in 2025, organizers are pulling out all the stops to create an event that’s not just a show, but an experience.

From thrilling ride-and-drive activations to the return of The Gallery’s ultra-luxury lineup, 2026 promises to redefine what an auto show can be—a celebration of innovation, community, and the future of mobility.

Why January Matters: Restoring a Detroit Tradition

There was a time when January in Detroit meant one thing—cars. For years, the Detroit Auto Show was the crown jewel of winter, bringing the industry’s biggest names together for dazzling vehicle debuts, media frenzy, and economic boom for the city.

That all changed in 2020, when organizers attempted to move the event to summer. Plans for outdoor experiences sounded promising, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced a complete shutdown. What followed was a rocky transition, with the show shifting to September in 2022 and 2023—but it never quite felt the same.

That’s why in 2025, the event returned to its January roots, bringing back a sense of tradition while embracing a new, experience-focused format. And while attendance was significantly lower than the pre-pandemic peak of 774,179 in 2019, the 2025 show still drew an impressive 275,000 visitors—a clear sign that Detroit’s auto show was back on track.

“January is synonymous with cars in the Motor City, and we expect plenty of auto-centric experiences to, once again, be on tap for the 2026 show,” said Todd Szott, chair of the Detroit Auto Show.

The move back to winter isn’t just nostalgia—it’s strategy. January aligns better with automakers’ marketing cycles, ensuring stronger industry participation. It also places Detroit in direct competition with CES in Las Vegas, a tech-driven event that has increasingly pulled focus from traditional auto shows.

Detroit isn’t just adapting—it’s reclaiming its spot at the forefront of automotive innovation.
