I recently had the opportunity to speak with a representative from AJ Danboise about the importance of checking your home’s furnace. There are three important reasons why you should do this on a regular basis.
The first is remember to have your furnace checked and cleaned yearly for efficiency and safety. Even new furnaces can get off-kilter after a couple years. Getting a cleaning check will return your furnace to its optimum level of fuel efficiency.
The second reason is that the warranty is nullified if you don’t. If a furnace breaks down within a couple of years, the warranty will honor any repair promises. Once you get past five years, however, the warranty is voided if you haven’t been getting the furnace serviced on a regular basis. Most major manufacturers consider a regular basis to be every 12 to 18 months. This means you could have a 15-year warranty on an excellent furnace, but if it malfunctions around, say, year seven, you can’t get it fixed if it hasn’t been regularly serviced.
Make sure you service your furnace every 12 to 18 months.
The third reason is to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. I’ve dealt with many clients in the past who have suffered illnesses due to carbon monoxide poisoning from a leaky furnace. The effects of carbon monoxide poisoning don’t necessarily happen all at once. Slow, unnoticeable leaks can cause headaches, nausea, and other flu-like symptoms over time.
In addition, you should keep at least two carbon monoxide detectors in your home: one within three feet of your furnace and one within three feet or your master bed. If you already have carbon monoxide detectors in your home, check their manufacturing dates. Most carbon monoxide detectors usually become defective after six to 12 years of use.
Don’t have a carbon monoxide detector? You’re in luck. This month, our team will be giving away two free carbon monoxide detectors to any family that needs them. Just stop in at any one of our three offices or email us and we’ll have someone drop them off at a location of your choosing.
