Today Kurt from Protech Environmental is here to talk about why getting your home tested for radon is so crucial.
What is radon and why is getting your home tested for it so important? Kurt from Protech Environmental is here to help me answer that for you today.
Radon is an odorless and colorless gas. It’s caused by uranium decay in the soil surrounding a home’s foundation and it usually makes its way into a home through cracks in the basement or through a sump pump.
In certain homes, radon levels can reach very dangerous highs, which is why testing is so crucial. Typically, below a 4.0 level is safe, but anything above that needs to be addressed immediately. In fact, radon is the second leading cause of cancer, second only to cigarette smoke, with the number of cases diagnosed each year at 18,000 to 21,0000 people.
The easiest way radon can enter a home is through a sump pump. Radon is removed from the home by sealing the sump pump and sucking out radon through piping that leads outdoors. There are other ways radon can get into a house as well, so make sure you have a radon test done. It’s both easy and inexpensive.
In fact, during the month of April, all of our past and current clients can test their homes for free. Just give us a call or send us an email and we’ll bring you out a testing kit. Make sure when you test to close your basement windows and doors as to avoid a false reading.
As always, if you’re looking to buy or sell a home, or if you have any other real estate needs, please don’t hesitate to give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you!
