Hot and Fresh: New Restaurant & Bar Openings in Metro Detroit (July 2025)

Detroit and its surrounding communities have welcomed several exciting new restaurants and bars this summer. Below are seven notable recent openings (including a few from late spring) that locals are buzzing about. Each entry includes key details, hours, location, and contact info, followed by a glimpse into what makes the spot special. Grab your calendar and start planning your next night out!

The Rectory Detroit

Open: Thur-Sat (4-10pm) | Sun (11am-8pm)
1920 Atkinson St, Detroit, MI 48206
Phone: (313) 631-1920
Website: The Rectory Detroit

The Rectory is a new pizzeria bringing Neapolitan-style pies to the historic Boston-Edison district of Detroit. What makes this opening truly unique is its setting, the restaurant occupies a beautifully remodeled 1920s-era house that had long sat vacant next door to The Congregation, a popular coffee bar housed in a former church. (Fittingly, the owners of The Congregation are behind this venture, and the cheeky name “The Rectory” nods to the building’s past.) Inside, you’ll find a cozy, casual dining room where a wood-burning oven churns out blistered Neapolitan pizzas with inventive toppings. The menu is focused, just pizzas plus a few salads and starters, but quality is key. Early favorites include the classic Margherita and a rich smoked beef & lamb meatball appetizer that’s perfect for sharing. When the weather’s nice, grab a seat on the newly opened outdoor deck to enjoy your pizza al fresco. The Rectory’s opening is more than just a new pizza place; it’s a sign of neighborhood revitalization, repurposing a historic home into a community gathering spot. Boston-Edison residents (and pizza lovers citywide) are thrilled to have this family-friendly hangout right in the neighborhood.

BrisaBar

Open: Mon-Wed, Sun (11am-9pm) | Thur-Sat (11am-11pm)
800 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: (313) 922-7272
website: BrisaBar

Downtown Detroit got a splashy new seasonal escape with the opening of Brisa Bar at Cabana 313. Located in Campus Martius Park (at 800 Woodward, right by the beachy sand pit that appears every summer), Brisa Bar brings laid-back tropical vibes to the heart of the city. This two-story outdoor bar has plenty of fun seating, think colorful lounge chairs, sand underfoot, and even an upper deck, making you feel like you’ve been whisked away to a beach resort, even as office towers rise overhead. The food menu sticks to easy summer crowd-pleasers: loaded nachos with smoked pork, crispy chicken wings, hot chicken pitas, jumbo quesadillas, shareable bites that pair perfectly with a cold drink. And speaking of drinks, Brisa’s beverage game is all about refreshing summer sippers. You’ll find spiked slushies and creative cocktails like the “Boardwalk Bubblegum,” a sweet concoction of whipped vodka and bubblegum soda that’s been turning heads (and satisfying sweet-tooths). Open daily until late evening, Brisa Bar has quickly become a go-to for downtown office workers winding down after work, families enjoying an urban outing (kids love playing in the sand), and anyone seeking a mini vacation vibe without leaving the city. If you’re downtown this summer, this tropical-themed pop-up bar is a must-visit for fun in the sun, no airfare required.

The Franklin Oyster Bar & Eatery

Open: Tue-Thur (4-10pm) | Fri (4-11pm) | Sat (10am-1pm, 4-11pm) | Sun (10am-1pm, 4-9pm)
32760 Franklin Rd, Franklin, MI 48025
Phone: (248) 771-4747
Website: The Franklin Oyster Bar & Eatery

A historic property in the quaint Village of Franklin has a new lease on life as an upscale oyster bar and restaurant. The Franklin Oyster Bar & Eatery opened in June, taking over the beloved Franklin Grill space which closed in late 2023 after 16 years. Housed in a lovingly restored 19th-century carriage house, The Franklin seamlessly blends East Coast charm with Midwest hospitality. Executive Chef Nick Geftos, a seafood specialist, offers a menu that will delight anyone who loves the fruits of the sea. As the name implies, oysters are a highlight: diners can order a variety of fresh-shucked oysters on the half shell, bringing a taste of Cape Cod to Oakland County. The menu extends to other creative seafood dishes as well. One standout is the seared octopus, glazed with truffle hot honey for an addictive sweet-and-spicy twist. You’ll also find classics like clams linguine, lobster rolls, and catch-of-the-day specials. Not a seafood person? There are a few landlover options and seasonal chef specials to round things out. The beverage program features craft cocktails and a well-curated wine list (including plenty of crisp whites and bubbly to pair with oysters). The Franklin is currently open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday, with brunch service on weekends, and those brunch dishes (like crab cake Benedict and brioche French toast) are already drawing in crowds. With a cozy dining room, a small intimate upstairs parlor for private dinners, and a charming patio for summer nights, The Franklin Oyster Bar & Eatery has quickly become the talk of the town. Longtime Franklin residents are pleased to see their landmark building in capable hands, and newcomers are discovering this tucked-away gem as a destination for date nights and celebrations.

Ryuu Sushi Lounge

Open: Tue-Sun (4-10pm)
17051 Kercheval Ave, Grosse Pointe, MI 48230
Phone: (313) 416-9083
Website: Ryuu Sushi Lounge

Grosse Pointe’s dining scene has a fresh new addition with Ryuu Sushi Lounge, a modern Japanese restaurant that opened in June on Kercheval Avenue. If that address sounds familiar, it’s because this spot was previously home to Shift Kitchen & Cocktails. After listening to community feedback and sensing a demand for sushi in the area, the owners decided to transform the concept, and thus, Ryuu Sushi was born. Now the space has been reimagined with sleek décor, a sushi bar, and ambient lighting that creates a hip yet family-friendly atmosphere. On the menu you’ll find all the sushi basics and then some: artfully crafted maki rolls (from California rolls to more inventive house specials), fresh nigiri and sashimi platters, and a variety of Asian-inspired small plates. Early patrons recommend the “Grosse Pointe Roll,” a colorful creation that balances spice and crunch, as well as the buttery salmon sashimi which rivals any downtown spot for quality. Ryuu also offers some non-sushi dishes to round things out, think edamame, gyoza dumplings, and tempura appetizers, and the chef, James Lee, has hinted that ramen and noodle bowls will be added soon as the kitchen expands its repertoire. With a full bar serving sake flights, Japanese beer, and creative cocktails, this restaurant works for both a casual weeknight dinner and a fun weekend outing. The opening of Ryuu Sushi Lounge has been met with enthusiasm by locals, who are happy to no longer have to drive far for good sushi. It’s a great example of a neighborhood spot evolving to suit local tastes. If you find yourself in Grosse Pointe craving sushi or just a new experience, Ryuu Sushi is worth checking out; it brings a welcome splash of downtown flavor into the heart of the Pointes.

Latitudes Restaurant & Bar, Facebook

Latitudes Restaurant & Bar

Open: Mon-Thur, Sun (11am-10pm) | Fri-Sat (11am-12am)
3455 Biddle Ave, Wyandotte, MI 48192
Phone: (734) 407-7042
Website: Latitudes Restaurant & Bar

Downriver diners have a new waterfront destination to explore this summer. Latitudes Restaurant & Bar opened in Wyandotte, taking over the former Portofino restaurant space along the Detroit River. After an extensive makeover, Latitudes has set sail with a fresh, breezy concept that combines a nautical atmosphere with a menu that leans into seafood and Caribbean influences. The restaurant boasts a spacious dining room with large windows, but the real star is the outdoor seating: a riverside patio and even a row of Adirondack chairs right by the water, perfect for sipping a drink as boats glide by. (In fact, Latitudes even offers a first-come, first-served dock for boaters; you can literally pull up by boat for dinner!) The menu is diverse but with a clear theme of fresh and fun. Starters include shareables like peel-and-eat shrimp and conch fritters, and there’s a raw bar selection for oyster fans. Sushi lovers will be pleasantly surprised, Latitudes has a sushi chef preparing hand rolls and creative maki (a nod to the pan-tropical menu mix). For mains, popular picks so far are the grilled yellowtail snapper (flown in from Florida) and a jerk-spiced Caribbean ribeye that fuses island flavors with Midwestern steakhouse tradition. Don’t skip the cocktails; tropical classics like the Hemingway Daiquiri are poured frozen, and their Key Lime Pie Martini has quickly become an Instagram star. Latitudes is open for lunch and dinner daily, making it a versatile spot, come by day for a sunny waterfront lunch or in the evening to catch a beautiful Downriver sunset. With TVs in the bar area for sports and a relaxed vacation-like vibe, this is a place equally suited to family dinners, date nights, or a round of drinks with friends. The arrival of Latitudes is a big win for Wyandotte, giving residents and visitors a taste of the islands close to home and further enlivening the city’s growing dining scene.

Fred’s

Open: Tue-Sun (9am-3pm)
1454 Gratiot Ave, Detroit, MI 48207
Phone: (313) 462-8152
Website: Fred’s

Breakfast and lunch lovers, rejoice, Fred’s has made its way to Detroit! This daytime café, originally a hit in Ann Arbor, has been reborn in Eastern Market (on Gratiot Ave in the former “Bunny Bunny” space). Fred’s is known for fresh, health-forward breakfast and lunch fare with a creative twist. The new Detroit location keeps that tradition going, serving up a menu full of colorful toasts, sandwiches, salads, and bowls that are as satisfying as they are photogenic. Early customers are already raving about the ricotta toast, which comes piled with fresh berries, local honey, and mint on thick-cut challah, a dish that’s both decadent and wholesome. Another must-try is the barbacoa breakfast sandwich: tender slow-cooked beef, velvety scrambled eggs, avocado, and spicy mayo all stacked on a soft Zingerman’s challah roll. (Many say this might be one of Detroit’s best breakfast sandwiches, it’s that good.) Lighter options like the quinoa bowls and açai smoothies cater to the health-conscious crowd, and there’s quality coffee to round out your meal. Fred’s interior is bright and welcoming, with cheery yellow accents and plenty of plants, making it a pleasant spot to start your day or grab a midday bite. Keep in mind Fred’s is open 9am to 3pm only, Tuesday through Sunday, so it’s strictly a breakfast/brunch/lunch affair. On weekends, expect a bit of a crowd, as Detroiters have eagerly embraced this Ann Arbor import. The Eastern Market neighborhood has seen a renaissance of foodie destinations, and Fred’s adds a family-friendly, casual option to the mix. It’s the kind of place you can take your kids after a morning at the market, meet a friend for a weekday lunch, or fuel up before exploring the city. For longtime fans who remember Fred’s from its Ann Arbor days, seeing it thrive in Detroit is heartwarming. And for those who are new to it, prepare to discover your new favorite brunch spot.

Raíces Mexican Cantina

Open: Mon-Thur, Sun (11am-10pm) | Fri-Sat (11am-11pm)
44805 Mound Rd, Sterling Heights, MI 48314
Phone: (586) 930-1821
Website: Raíces Mexican Cantina

Sterling Heights has welcomed a vibrant new Mexican restaurant this summer with the opening of Raíces Mexican Cantina. “Raíces” means “roots” in Spanish, and this eatery lives up to its name by delivering authentic flavors rooted in Mexican tradition, all in a lively, modern cantina setting. The restaurant is owned by Maria Aldana, a veteran restaurateur who also operates two other popular local Mexican spots (Aldana’s in Troy and Las Cazuelas in Detroit). With Raíces, she brings her decades of experience to Macomb County, and you can feel the passion in every detail. The menu is expansive, covering everything from classic street tacos to more elaborate dishes. Craving comfort food? Try their sizzling steak fajitas or the cheesy birria quesadillas (served with a rich consommé for dipping). The taco selection ranges from al pastor and carne asada to Baja-style fried fish and spicy shrimp, so there’s something for everyone. One standout item is the quesabirria tacos, stuffed with slow-braised beef and oozing with cheese, which have quickly developed a following among local foodies. Raíces also features some Tex-Mex favorites like loaded nacho platters and overstuffed burritos, making it a hit with families and big appetites. Make sure to save room for dessert, because they serve churros from the beloved local bakery La Niña (a sweet detail that shows Raíces’ commitment to partnering with Michigan businesses). As for drinks, the cantina bar does not disappoint: you’ll find tequila flights for the aficionados, over a dozen varieties of margaritas, and fun cocktails in every color. Happy hour runs weekdays from 1pm to 6pm, with discounts on beers, house margs, and apps, perfect for an after-work hangout. The atmosphere inside Raíces is festive and welcoming, with bright murals, plenty of seating, and music adding to the energy. Since opening in April, it’s been steadily drawing crowds, and it’s easy to see why: this place combines the warmth of a family-run restaurant with the polish of a big establishment. It’s a great addition to Sterling Heights, especially for residents who previously had to drive further for a full-service Mexican dining experience. If you’re near M-59 and Mound, stop by Raíces to “taste the roots”; You’ll leave full, happy, and maybe with a new favorite dinner spot.

Bittersweet Goodbyes: Notable Metro Detroit Restaurant Closures (July 2025)

With all the new activity, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, but the Metro Detroit dining scene also saw a few closings recently that deserve a fond farewell. From a downtown bakery retreating to its original neighborhood to the curtain call of a 60-year-old pizzeria in Warren, here are eight establishments that have closed their doors this summer. Each had its own place in the community and history in our area. Pour one out for these eateries, and read on to learn what happened (and in some cases, where you can still get a taste of what they offered).

Good Cakes and Bakes

Closed: June 2025 (after 2 years at this location)
19363 Livernois, Detroit, MI 48221

This closure was a tough one for Detroit’s sweet-tooth community. Good Cakes and Bakes, an acclaimed organic bakery originally from the city’s Avenue of Fashion (Livernois), decided to close its downtown location in the District Detroit this June. The shop had opened two years ago near the Fox Theatre, bringing its famous cupcakes, layer cakes, and cookies to the downtown core. It quickly became known for decadent treats like strawberry crunch cake slices and peach cobbler cookies, all made with organic ingredients and lots of love. So why did it shutter? According to the owners April Anderson and Michelle Anderson, the decision wasn’t due to a lack of popularity in the product (downtown office workers and event-goers certainly enjoyed it) but rather a strategic choice: they opted not to renew the lease at Columbia Street. In a heartfelt Instagram post announcing the closure, the team explained they want to focus on their original Good Cakes and Bakes location in the Bagley neighborhood, where it all began. That flagship bakery on Livernois has a deeply loyal following and is still going strong, so fans of their confections can still get their fix by heading northwest to the Avenue of Fashion. Still, the downtown spot’s closing marks a shift in District Detroit, an area that has seen some turnover as it develops. Good Cakes and Bakes’ downtown run may have been short-lived, but it left a sweet legacy and reinforced the fact that this local business’s heart is truly in the neighborhood that first embraced it.

Moro’s Dining

Closed: June 2025 (after 45 years in business)
6535 Allen Road, Allen Park, MI 48101

After 45 years of serving old-school Italian American classics, Moro’s Dining in Allen Park has turned off the lights and hung up the apron. This family-run restaurant was a Downriver institution, a place where generations of diners celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, or simply enjoyed a special night out. Moro’s was famous for its traditional continental menu: think veal Marsala, shrimp scampi, house-made pastas, and the kind of decadent desserts (Cherries Jubilee, anyone?) that were prepared tableside in the dining room. Stepping into Moro’s was like stepping back in time, in the best way, complete with white tablecloths and impeccable old-fashioned service. The decision to close didn’t come out of nowhere; in fact, owner and head chef Thomas Moro had been planning for retirement for a while. In 2022 he listed the restaurant for sale, hoping someone might carry on the legacy, but ultimately no deal materialized. By June of this year, Moro’s served its final meal. Loyal patrons who call the restaurant’s phone now hear a recorded message thanking them for decades of support and reassuring them that “Chef Thomas Moro is doing fine” in his retirement. It’s a poignant end of an era for Allen Park. The restaurant scene has evolved over the decades, but Moro’s remained a constant until now. The building (on Allen Road near Southfield) sits quiet, awaiting whatever comes next. For locals, Moro’s closing is a reminder to cherish our classic hometown eateries. Chef Moro earned a well-deserved rest after nearly half a century of cooking from the heart, but his restaurant’s warm, welcoming spirit will live on in the memories of all who dined there.

Ferlito’s

Closed: Late June 2025 (opened in 1970s)
20745 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236

Another long-running Italian favorite that said goodbye this summer is Ferlito’s, located on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Woods. Ferlito’s had been serving up pizza and pasta to the east side for nearly five decades. It first opened in the 1970s and became one of those beloved neighborhood fixtures – the kind of place where Little League teams would gather for pizza parties and families knew the menu by heart. The current owner, Joshua Mowen, took over the restaurant in 2015 from the original family and kept the tradition alive for a new generation. Unfortunately, as the saying goes, all good things come to an end. In late June, Ferlito’s held its last service, citing increasingly difficult economics of keeping the business going. In a candid message to customers on social media, Mowen explained that the cost of maintaining the aging building had become a major burden, from constant repairs to high upkeep expenses, making it unsustainable to continue operating the dine-in restaurant. It was clearly a heart-wrenching decision, given the restaurant’s history and loyal following. However, there’s a silver lining for fans: the Ferlito’s legacy isn’t entirely gone. Mowen also runs Ferlito’s Pizzeria in St. Clair Shores, a takeout and delivery spot that was launched a few years ago. That location (which focuses on carryout pizzas, pastas, ribs, and sandwiches) remains open and will carry on the Ferlito’s name. So while Grosse Pointe Woods loses its cozy dining room with checkered tablecloths and friendly servers who knew your kids’ names, you can still get a taste of Ferlito’s signature square pizza and most of the menu favorites just a few miles away. It’s always sad to see a community cornerstone close its doors, but the spirit of Ferlito’s will live on, both through its St. Clair Shores outpost and in the many fond memories made over countless meals since the 1970s.

Willie’s Donuts

Closed: June 2025 (after decades; mid-1990s)
23055 21 Mile Road, Macomb, MI 48042

In Macomb Township, donut lovers had to bid farewell to a true classic. Willie’s Donuts, a mom-and-pop donut shop that had been satisfying sweet cravings in northern Macomb County for ages, has officially closed up shop this summer. Willie’s was one of those unassuming, beloved local bakeries, tucked in a strip plaza on 21 Mile, known for its super-fresh fried dough goodies and no-frills charm. Longtime customers will reminisce about the early mornings when Willie’s doors would open at 5am, the scent of sugar and fry oil wafting in the air, and regulars lining up for their famous apple fritters, custard-filled long johns, and classic glazed rings. The closure came quietly; one day the “closed” sign just didn’t flip back to “open.” It turns out the owners decided it was time to retire and move on, ending Willie’s long run. But here’s a piece of good news: the donut-shaped hole in the community won’t last for long. Golden Donuts, a newer Metro Detroit donut chain that’s been expanding, plans to take over the space and open its third location there. So while Willie’s Donuts as we knew it is no more, the tradition of grabbing a sweet treat at 23055 21 Mile Road will continue. Golden Donuts has some big shoes to fill (Willie’s had quite the reputation), but many locals are optimistic and eager to see (and taste) what the new shop offers. As one chapter closes and another begins, it’s a reminder of how even in closures, there’s often a sprinkle of continuity for the community.

Pinky's, Facebook

Pinky’s Rooftop

Closed: June 2025 (after 6 years in business)
100 S. Main Street, Royal Oak, MI 48067

Royal Oak’s vibrant downtown lost a bit of its pink sparkle this summer with the closure of Pinky’s Rooftop. Opened in 2019, Pinky’s quickly became known for its whimsical, Instagram-friendly decor and its lively rooftop bar scene. The entire restaurant was a visual delight, floral wall installations, pink neon signs, and a lush outdoor garden terrace on the roof decorated with twinkling lights. It was a popular spot for girls’ nights out, date nights, and anyone looking for a fun atmosphere. The menu at Pinky’s was just as playful as the design, featuring creative cocktails (some garnished with cotton candy or popsicles) and modern American small plates. Over six years, Pinky’s carved out a niche in Royal Oak’s competitive bar and restaurant scene. However, as of late June, Pinky’s has officially shuttered. The exact reasons weren’t heavily publicized, but insiders cite the challenges of rising rents and shifting nightlife trends. The hospitality group behind Pinky’s, Adam Merkel Restaurants, made the call to close and perhaps refocus on their other ventures. For those who loved the location, there is a silver lining: The Pearl Room, a swanky speakeasy-style lounge located on the floor below Pinky’s (and operated by the same group), remains open. The Pearl Room offers a more intimate, cocktail-forward experience and will continue to serve guests in the building at 100 S. Main. Still, seeing Pinky’s Rooftop go is bittersweet for Royal Oakers. It was a place that literally rose above the rest (eight flights up!) and added character to the city’s nightlife. As we say goodbye to its cotton-candy cocktails and pink decor, we acknowledge how Pinky’s captured a moment in time, the era of the “themed” rooftop bar, and brought a lot of joy to those who visited. Royal Oak’s dining and bar scene continues to evolve, and we’ll be watching to see what new concept eventually takes over that rosy rooftop space.

Super Baked

Closed: June 2025 (after 3.5 years in business)
18714 Eureka Road, Southgate, MI 48195

Downriver’s dessert scene got a little dimmer with the closure of Super Baked, a bakery in Southgate that specialized in over-the-top sweets. Opened in late 2021, Super Baked quickly gained a following for its creative cupcakes, cookies, and other baked indulgences, many of which had fun, punny names and plenty of frosting. They were also known for offering vegan-friendly options, making them a hit among those with dairy or egg restrictions who still craved delicious treats. Over its three-and-a-half-year run, the shop became a favorite for picking up birthday cupcakes, weekend goodies, and custom orders for events. Unfortunately, Super Baked announced in June that it would be closing its doors. The owners shared the news in a heartfelt social media post, thanking customers for their support and reminiscing on the sugar-filled journey. No specific reason was given publicly, but it’s no secret that running a small bakery has been challenging in recent times, from ingredient cost hikes to staffing issues. The community response was one of sadness but also gratitude; many Downriver residents commented online about how Super Baked provided treats for their special occasions and will be missed. Southgate and the surrounding area still have other bakeries, of course, but each has its unique niche, and Super Baked’s mix of whimsical, allergy-friendly confections set it apart. Its closing serves as a reminder of the tough business environment small shops face. Still, the legacy of sweet memories it created remains. We wish the owners of Super Baked the best in their next chapter, and we know many locals will remember that small shop on Eureka Road fondly (perhaps every time they get a cupcake craving!).

Hooters

Closed: June 2025 (last Metro Detroit location of the chain)
21250 Eureka Road, Taylor, MI 48180

In June, Metro Detroiters saw the last Hooters in the region close its doors, as the Taylor Hooters shut down after many years of cold beers, hot wings, and sports viewing. Love it or not, Hooters has been a recognizable name in American casual dining for decades, famous (or infamous) for its wings and the servers’ signature orange shorts uniform. At one point, Metro Detroit had multiple Hooters locations, but one by one they’ve closed over the years, leaving only the Taylor restaurant standing… until now. The Taylor Hooters, located on Eureka Road near I-75, quietly ceased operations in June, effectively marking the end of an era for the chain in Southeast Michigan. The timing isn’t entirely surprising: earlier in April, the parent company of Hooters had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, announcing plans to restructure and convert to a franchise-only model. Many corporate-owned stores were on the chopping block. The Taylor outpost apparently was one of them, as no franchisee was lined up. Michigan isn’t completely without Hooters, there’s still one in Saginaw, but in the Metro Detroit area, sports bar fans will have to look elsewhere (thankfully, there’s no shortage of local sports bars and grill pubs around). The closure has practical implications too: that stretch of Eureka Road in Taylor is a busy commercial corridor, and the large standalone building now sits vacant, possibly a real estate opportunity for a new restaurant or retailer. For longtime patrons who have nostalgia for Hooters’ particular brand of casual fun, it’s a sad moment. However, tastes and times change, and the market has arguably shifted towards more modern sports bars or family-friendly grill concepts. Taylor’s Hooters served its last plate of wings this summer, and with that, the iconic orange owl signage is gone from Metro Detroit. We raise a toast to the memories (and maybe to the three-mile island sauce), and look ahead to what might come next for that spot.

Firenze Restaurant & Pizzeria

Closed: June 2025 (after ~60 years in business)
11028 E. 10 Mile Road, Warren, MI 48089

Perhaps one of the most surprising closures of all came from Warren, where Firenze Restaurant & Pizzeria abruptly shut down in June, ending a run that lasted nearly six decades. Yes, you read that right: Firenze had been serving the community since 1964. It started as a humble pizzeria and Italian-American eatery and grew into a local institution known for hearty pasta dinners, Detroit-style pizza, and a welcoming atmosphere that stood the test of time. The restaurant, located on 10 Mile Road, had a loyal customer base that spanned multiple generations. In recent years, however, Firenze struggled to keep up with the times. This spring, there was buzz that celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay paid a visit to Firenze to film an episode of his new makeover show “Secret Service” (a show where Ramsay supposedly goes undercover to help troubled restaurants). That rumor electrified the community, could a Ramsay rescue be in the works? Indeed, not long after, Firenze temporarily closed for a short remodel and then reopened with a revamped menu. Unfortunately, the changes might have been too much, too late. Longtime patrons noted that many of their favorite classic dishes had disappeared from the new menu, and the refreshed concept didn’t resonate as hoped. Within a month or two of the makeover, Firenze Restaurant & Pizzeria permanently closed its doors. It was an unexpected finale for a place that had survived so much (countless trends, economic ups and downs, etc.) over 60 years. The abrupt closure suggests that even a sprinkle of TV magic couldn’t save it. As of now, the space is dark and the future is uncertain. Will someone attempt to revive the Firenze name or will a new concept take over? Time will tell. Warren locals, meanwhile, are left with memories of family dinners at Firenze, from the days when grandpa took the kids out for pizza in the 70s to the recent visits for that favorite plate of gnocchi. It’s always sad to lose a piece of local history. We salute Firenze for its long legacy in Warren and acknowledge that its closing truly marks the end of an era on the east side.
