All you need to know about the Marche du Nain Rouge

The Nain Rouge has returned to haunt our fair city. Let’s chase him out!

Heading into spring, and usually right around the Spring Equinox there’s more to do in Detroit than just spring cleaning. Detroiters join in the Midtown Cass Corridor for a party and parade to chase the Nain Rouge, the harbinger of doom, out of Detroit. This annual parade is more than just a celebration; it's a symbolic gesture of defiance against the city's challenges, wrapped in folklore, community spirit, and a whole lot of fun. It’s a celebration of the pride and spirit of Detroit.

At Mardi Gras, a Krewe is a group of people joining together to throw a party or parade. At the Marche Du Nain Rouge, Detroit's Krewes wear ridiculous costumes, make floats, speak terrible French, listen to even worse music, and of course dance down the street.

When and where is it?

Noon: Gather at the intersection of Canfield and Second for a celebration of Detroit with live Mardi Gras style music.

1 PM: Parade down to the Masonic Temple for the closing ceremony and Official Afterparty. We ARE the parade so dress in your Sunday Best, your best costume or mask.

AWARDS: Awards will be given for the best Detroit Neighborhood Krewe and best float.

Origins and Legend

The Marche du Nain Rouge, which translates to "March of the Red Dwarf," is rooted in a legend dating back over 300 years to the time of Detroit's founding. The Nain Rouge, a malevolent spirit described as a red-faced dwarf, is said to appear during pivotal moments in the city's history, bringing misfortune and woes. The earliest sighting was by Detroit's founder, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who was told by a fortune teller to appease the Nain Rouge, but instead attached it with his cane and shouted “Get out of my way you imp”. He was forever cursed by the Nain and had a string of bad luck ending him in a French prison. The Nain Rouge appearing before the Battle of Bloody run in 1763 to being sighted before the fire of 1805 that almost wiped out the whole city, to modern-day sightings before the massive snow storm that buried the city in 1976, the Nain Rouge has been both a scapegoat and a rallying cry for Detroiters facing adversity.

In recent years, the Marche du Nain Rouge has been revitalized as a beloved tradition that brings together the diverse communities of Metro Detroit. Held annually on a Sunday in March, this event is not just a parade but a vibrant festival that celebrates the city's ability to overcome obstacles and bounce back stronger than ever. Participants dress in elaborate costumes, ranging from whimsical to the bizarre, embodying the spirit of creativity and resilience that defines Detroit. And there might be a few Teletubbies, Queen Elizabeth’s, power rangers and ninja turtles. Last year I saw Darth Vader chasing the Nain.

The parade route winds through the streets of Midtown, starting at the corner of Canfield and Second, and culminates in a symbolic banishment of the Nain Rouge. Participants are encouraged to don their most outlandish costumes and join in the march, which features floats, bands, and a variety of performers. The culmination of the parade is the ceremonial banishment of the Nain Rouge, where a person dressed as the infamous dwarf is chased away from the city, symbolizing the community's collective will to cast out bad fortune and embrace the future with optimism.
